'Transgender women aren't women'

So, I am sure most of you have heard of this Australian academic Germaine Greer. She is known for her controversial expression about transgender women. "I think people should be allowed to have the male to female procedure... all I'm saying is that it doesn't make them a woman," she said in an interview with BBC Newsnight.

I've gathered a few statements that she has told the public before I express my own opinion.

  • Germaine Greer  doesn't personally think she's transphobic.
  • She said she would be prepared to use female pronouns for transgender women if it was their preference, only 'as a courtesy'.
  • She has suggested transgender women could never be women because they did not know what it was like to have a 'big, hairy, smelly vagina'.
  • She has said that transgender women were like ghastly parodies and were simply 'a man's delusion'.
  •  Transgender women were not women because they did not 'look like, sound like or behave like' real women.

First of all, her definition of being a woman is quite crazy. Although in this day and age, there is nothing shocking about what she said 'transgender women don't know what it's like to have a 'big, hairy, smelly vagina', it is shocking how an academic would be so unprofessional to define this as being a woman.  To me, this lecturer sounds confused, intolerant and so unprofessional.

The next factor I want to talk about is her outlook on being a transgender and being a woman. She seems to look at only biological factors of being a woman and being transgender. However, biology is just a part of who and what we are. She completely ignores psychological and sociological factors that have an incredible amount of affect on our lives and the way we are and will be in the future.

Based on these statements, it is obvious she doesn't care one bit that she might be offending someone as she believes it's her freedom of speech to say whatever she wants to say. Personally, I agree with her in terms of having the right to say what she wants, because everyone can express themselves and share their opinion with others. However, I also believe that everyone has the right to agree or disagree about something. In this case, it is obvious a lot of people disagree with her and have even made a petition calling on Cardiff University to dump Greer’s lecture scheduled for November 18, titled ‘Women & Power: The Lessons of the 20th Century’ and over 2200 people have signed it.

At the end of the day, no one should ever forget that as long as you are not hurting anyone, we can do what makes us happy as we all have the right to be happy human beings, and no one should be dealing with discrimination, labeling or bullying. And to end this on a good note, I would just like to say that my message to everyone is to be positive, tolerant towards each other and don't let all the negativity get to you or affect you in any shape or form. Because we are awesomeeeeeee.
